Our story

From The South to Brett’s Burgers

Some people find the restaurant business. Brett Sturm was born into it.

Brett was born at Swedish Medical Center, barely a mile from the place that would shape so much of his life: The South Restaurant in Englewood, Colorado. His father, Jerry Sturm, a former Denver Bronco and one of the franchise’s Top 100 players. He helped establish The South in 1970. But for more than five decades, Brett’s mother, Deb Sturm, has been the heart, brains and steady hand behind the restaurant.

Brett grew up at The South. It wasn’t just where his family worked. It was where he learned about people, hospitality, loyalty, hard work and what it takes to build a neighborhood restaurant that generations of families continue coming back to.

Football eventually took Brett to San Diego State University, where he played safety, graduated from SDSU and earned Defensive Player of the Year honors. That competitive streak never really left him.

After college, Brett eventually returned to the restaurant business and opened Zi South, a downtown Denver spinoff of The South. Owning and operating his own restaurant brought plenty of highs and plenty of lows, but it also gave him an education no classroom could. He learned what worked, what didn’t, how expensive mistakes can be and how much he still loved creating a place where people genuinely wanted to be.

Life eventually took Brett west again, all the way to Hawaii. Today, his roots stretch between Colorado and Hawaii, and he works as a Sales Manager for Marriott while raising his family. He is the father of two girls, Kira and Sydney, who have given him an entirely new reason to think about what he wants to build and leave behind.

And through every chapter, The South has remained home.

At 43, Brett decided it was time to chase another dream.

Brett’s Burgers takes everything he has learned from his parents, football, business, hospitality, Colorado, Hawaii and his own mistakes and puts it into something deliberately simple: an incredible burger, cold beer, sports, and a place where people actually enjoy hanging out.

The concept starts in Englewood, right where the story began, alongside The South Restaurant. But Brett’s vision goes much further. The goal is to build a brand that can eventually grow from Colorado to communities across the United States without losing the personality that made the original special.

Brett still turns to his mom for her guidance and wisdom. After more than 50 years in the restaurant business, Deb has seen just about everything and Brett knows how fortunate he is to have learned from both of his parents.

Brett’s Burgers is the next chapter of that family story.
